Give a mod experiment a way back

A crossover can be interesting without belonging in a player's everyday game setup. Before following an author's installation instructions, decide which parts of the existing setup need to survive the experiment. This is a planning checklist, not an installation guide for a particular release or a claim that any listed project has been independently tested.

Write down the starting state

Record the base game's version, the mod loader if one is used, the existing mod list and the location of the save you intend to use. Those details help separate an installation mistake from a mismatch between the project and the environment. Keep the record local; a public support post does not need your full home-directory path or account identifier.

Ask the project's own documentation which files it changes. A new profile, separate instance or copied save may offer separation where the game supports it, but do not assume that every project supports those options. If the author gives no explanation of how to reverse the change, treat that as an unresolved requirement before proceeding.

Check the copy rather than the filename

A folder called backup is not proof of a usable recovery copy. Confirm that the files you intended to preserve are present, identify which game version produced them and keep the original separate from the files used for the trial. Do not experiment on the only copy of a save you care about.

For an important save, use the game's documented recovery method to check a copy in an appropriate separate environment. That check should not overwrite the active save. If you cannot identify a safe recovery path, postpone the experiment instead of making a promise that copying a folder guarantees restoration.

Define what will end the trial

Choose one small goal: opening the project, reaching a particular menu, or checking whether the described mechanic is present. Record what happened and where it stopped. Launching successfully says less than completing a session, and a session in one environment does not establish universal compatibility.

Finish by returning to the preserved setup through the author's documented removal procedure. Keep any unexpected file changes in your notes. This makes a later support question more useful than a vague report that the game broke.

Merging Games helps locate game crossovers and their original creator sources. The directory is a discovery step; the current project documentation should establish the requirements and recovery procedure for the release you actually intend to try.
