$77k just flipped from support to resistance — don't buy this dip

The call: BTC $76,983 is below the $77.7k recent-buyer cost basis and below my $77,600 cut line — SPEC-BTC-1027 is stopped down to 1/4 size. No new long until a daily close back above $80k with ETF inflow.

Why now: IBIT just printed a $405M outflow, its biggest since June; ETF cohort is underwater at ~$81.5k and selling rallies, while offshore longs rebuilt into the fall.

The disagreement: Consensus says midterms + seasonality = bounce. On-chain says underwater holders sell every bounce to $77.7–80k.

The level that changes everything: Daily close above $80k with >$300M ETF inflow flips me long; daily close below $75,772 opens $70–73k.

Position: Flat to 1/4 long max, 1–2 week horizon. Conviction: WATCH (levels set, no trigger).

Story 1: Underwater buyers now cap every rally at $77.7–80k

This is the only chart that matters today. Bitcoin fell below the $77,700 realized price of the 1-to-3-month buyer cohort — the group CryptoQuant calls speculative traders whose cost basis held as support since August 19. When price sits below it, that same line becomes resistance because every bounce to breakeven is a chance to exit.

It's not just one cohort. Short-term holders (coins <155 days) carry a $75,832 cost basis, only ~1.2% below spot. Their SOPR printed 0.992 on Oct 30 — selling at a loss for the first time since August. Only 34% of STH supply is still in profit. Below $75,772 there is almost no on-chain supply between $70k and $75k to slow a fall; the next dense band is $68,400 (a 12% loss for recent buyers).

ETFs confirm the selling-into-strength regime. October was the first net outflow month since June (-$290M), then Oct 30 saw a $643M single-day outflow, then Monday Nov 2 added $398.6M net outflow with IBIT alone -$405.3M, its biggest since June. The average ETF holder sits underwater at ~$81.5k. As Bitfinex Alpha put it: ETF investors are trading the range, not accumulating — buying strength, selling weakness. Until $81.5k is reclaimed, expect every rally toward $80–82k to meet that supply.

Meanwhile leverage rebuilt the wrong way: futures open interest rose 12.1% in BTC terms over 19 days while price fell 5.3%, funding stayed positive, and $1.57B of mostly-longs liquidated around the Binance hack. Call open interest still outweighs puts 3-to-1 at $82k/$85k. That's overhead, not fuel.

I think the GMMA bear cross CoinDesk flags today (short EMAs below long EMAs, long bundle rolling over — same setup as the January $90k→$62k and May→sub-$60k breaks) is real but secondary. The on-chain + ETF story is the mechanism; the moving-average cross is just the photo of it.

Story 2: The $6.3B Binance hack is contained — but the proof is due today

The hack itself didn't break market structure; weak tech and weak spot demand did. BTC fell 3.5% in the four-hour hack window, then another leg with the Nasdaq-100 sliding 10% into correction and Apple warning on memory-chip/AI margins. I'd treat Binance as accelerant, not cause — which is actually good news.

What still matters is the trust tail. Binance drained its SAFU fund from 15,000 BTC to ~7,500 BTC (~$580M) on Oct 31, now below its own $800M top-up trigger, with no refill timeline. Withdrawals restarted Nov 1: $4.65B out vs $1.01B in, ~$5.8B net outflow in 24h — orderly so far, not a run, and Binance says 95% of stolen assets replaced. But the full zero-knowledge proof of reserves is promised for today, Nov 3. Any slip, qualification, or phased-withdrawal delay turns a contained event into a second confidence shock.

The second-order effect is already visible: DEX spot share hit a record 24.1% of CEX volume in July and the hack pushes more flow onchain — constructive for UNI/HYPE over months, irrelevant to BTC direction this week.

What to do: stay light, fade $80–82k, wait for midterm + jobs to clear

I'd do nothing long here beyond the stub. SPEC-BTC-1027 rule was explicit: daily close below $77,600 → cut to 1/4. BTC closed Oct 30 at $77,361, traded $76.7–78.5k since, and sits $76,983 now. That rule is triggered — I acknowledge the loss on the 3/4. Holding a full long into underwater-supply + ETF-selling + midterm event risk is hope, not a trade.

TradeDetail
VehicleBTC spot / IBIT proxy — no alts, alts are 2.2x beta to BTC drawdowns
EntryNo new entry. Re-add only on daily close >$80k AND ETF net inflow >+$300M in same session
Target$84,300 first (Oct 21 breakdown + overhead supply), stretch $88,000 (yearly-open magnet at $87.5k)
InvalidationDaily close below $75,772 (STH cost) — cut stub, expect $73k 200-day then $70–68.4k
Timeframe1–2 weeks (midterms Nov 3, jobs Nov 6, CPI Nov 10)
ConvictionWATCH — levels set, no trigger. Directional bias: fade rallies until trigger
Bull (25%): Midterm result removes overhang + Binance PoR clean + jobs soft → ETF flows flip positive, BTC reclaims $80k, squeeze to $84–85.5k where 2.26M BTC sit overhead. Base (50%): Chop $74.4–81.75k (options-implied to Nov 6 expiry), band $77–80k holds on closes but rallies sold. Bear (25%): Tech second leg + ETF outflow >$300M/day + supply-in-profit <58% → lose $75.8k, test $73k 200-day, wick $70k.

What would prove me wrong: (1) Daily close above $80k with ETF inflow >$300M and funding <5% ann. — I'd flip long toward $84.3k. (2) STH-SOPR back above 1.0 for 3 days + supply-in-profit above 62% — capitulation over. (3) Conversely, a daily close below $75,772 confirms the bear leg and kills any dip-buy.

24–48h watch: (a) Midterm results landing Asia Wed morning — BTC's 5th straight weekly loss is on the line; (b) Binance PoR today — clean = relief, delay/qualified = sell; (c) ETF prints Nov 3–4 — any >$300M outflow day = support failing; (d) Nasdaq-100 vs Oct 30 low — second leg down drags BTC to STH cost via 0.68 correlation.

The risk most are ignoring: Everyone frames the hack as the cause and midterms as the cure. The data says the opposite — US spot demand was absent all October (Coinbase premium negative every session, 30-day apparent demand negative since Oct 14) because credit tightened (HY spreads wide, 10Y touched 5.37%, Dec hike priced ~75%). If credit keeps tightening, even a clean election + clean PoR doesn't bring the ETF bid back. Watch credit spreads, not headlines.

B. Model & assumptions

Load-bearing assumption: underwater realized-price bands ($77.7k, $75.8k) act as resistance in downtrends, and ETF holders with ~$81.5k cost behave as range sellers until reclaimed. If ETF flows turn strongly positive below cost (i.e., genuine accumulation through loss), the resistance thesis breaks and I'd flip long even below $80k — watch Nov 3–4 prints. Options-implied range $74.4–81.75k to Nov 6 expiry (IV 40.7%) frames base-case chop.
